Director Mace Gets Tortured By Superior In New Agents of SHIELD Clip

02/11/2017 05:53 pm EST

In last Tuesday's episode of Agents of SHIELD, Director Jeffrey Mace (Jason O'Mara) was informed that his wannabe "super soldier serum" is lethal and, each time he uses, it could cause him to go into cardiac arrest. He finds the news devastating as he is struggling to figure out what his place is on the team. By the end of the episode, when he realizes the Russians have set a trap for SHIELD, Mace throws caution to the wind, injects the serum in his body, and heroically stays behind to act as a blocker. He put up a tremendous fight but, in the end, he was subdued by Superior's men and captured.

In this new sneak peek, we see a shirtless, bruised, and battered Mace is tied to a chair in the villain's submarine. Superior walks in and tells Mace about how the respect he felt for his own father evaporated when he witnessed his hardworking dad kiss up to a wealthy, entitled man.

"You see, there is something lower than scum," he says to Mace. "That which strives to be it."

Mace fights for his life while Coulson and team find themselves in a deadly cat-and-mouse game as they attempt his rescue.

The regular cast features Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie, and John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe.

The guest cast includes Jason O'Mara as Director Jeffrey Mace, Mallory Jansen as Aida 2.0, Maximilian Osinski as Agent Davis, Zach McGowan as The Superior, Frederick Lawrence as guard, Stivi Paskoski as lead SVR agent, and Alexander Chemyshev as Russian thug.

"The Man Behind the Shield" is written by Matt Owens and directed by Wendey Stanzler
