Doctor Strange: What Magical Artifacts Are In The Film?

Spider-Man got his powers from being bitten by a radioactive spider. The Fantastic Four got their powers from cosmic rays. Many X-Men characters derive their powers from a genetic mutation. However, Doctor Strange is just a man, and yet, he is arguably more powerful than all of them. How can that be? Well, he derives his immense powers and abilities from extra-dimensional beings, magical artifacts, and uses his superior intelligence to memorize powerful spells.

So far, we've seen in the trailers and television spots several magical artifacts Strange will use in the film. There's the Eye of Agamotto, a powerful amulet created by the Vishanti and worn by Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. It can do many many things, such as summoning images of the past and emitting a powerful mystical light that reveals disguises/illusions to the wearer. We've also seen the Book of the Vishanti, a powerful white/defense magic book that contains every known counterspell. Lastly, the Cloak of Levitation, a cloak that allows the wearer to levitate.

So, how many more magical artifacts can we expect to see in the film?

"There was a lot of discussion about how much to use, because you can obviously get into an overload of those things," Scott Derrickson explained to ComicBook.com during a set visit. "I think the Harry Potter movies are proof that audiences love that stuff. They love the idea of magical objects, and they like learning the rules of those objects and what they do. I think everything that we do, I think all the names of everything and I think all the things that we use in the movie, are drawn from the comics. I can't think of one, at least offhand, that's not drawn from the comics. Yeah."

Not every artificat will come straight out of the source material, though. One new addition is Sling Rings, little brass knuckles that let characters teleport. Derrickson explained: "The gateways, the forming of the gateways that are used for that, that's straight out of the comics. I just needed an object for them to carry it on."

From Marvel comes DOCTOR STRANGE, the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place – a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange – armed with newly acquired magical powers – is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. Join Strange on his dangerous, mystifying, and totally mind-bending journey.

The cast features Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Into Darkness, The Imitation Game), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and written by Derrickson, Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister).

Marvel's Doctor Strange is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.
