How Guardians 2 Flipped The Script On Gamora And Nebula's Relationship

The latest blockbuster from Marvel Studios continued the story of the team of the cosmos-rescuing space pirates known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, testing their relationships and pushing the characters into new situations.

The original film established the team and their motivations, giving a hint into their troublesome pasts while laying the groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond planet earth. And while we might have thought we knew exactly who the bad guys and good guys were, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 flipped the script on one particular pairing.

While responding to spoilerific fan questions during a Facebook Live Q&A, James Gunn spoke about sisters Gamora and Nebula and why their relationship was strained to the point where one was usually trying to murder the other.

"We think that Nebula and Gamora… in the last movie, that Nebula is the bad guy and Gamora is the good guy," Gunn said. In this movie we learn that Gamora is the transgressor. She's the older bully sister. She has been unspeakably cruel to her sister Nebula and we understand why Nebula doesn't like her."

Nebula's and Gamora's relationship was one of the film's highlights, providing some of the most satisfying emotional beats and leading to what could be argued as the best action sequence in the entire film. Kudos to Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan for knocking it out of the park.

"Their story and their relationship with each other is the crux of the movie in so many ways," Gunn added. "In fact, when Peter Quill talks about what the funeral means to him, that isn't the end of that. That leads into the story between Nebula and Gamora."

That specific story point could conceivably carry the Guardians of the Galaxy into Avengers: Infinity War, especially given Nebula's stated quest to kill her father Thanos. The movie ends with Nebula departing from the Guardians to fulfill her goal, but not without finally giving her sister a big ol' hug.
