Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 May Break MCU Canon

The Marvel Universe is one complicated place, and its canon is almost impossible to follow. The universe originally began as a multiverse which Marvel has consolidated and blown apart over the years. When it comes to Hollywood, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's canon reigns supreme, but it is not impervious. According to James Gunn, the director is tempted to twist the MCU canon a bit for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Recently, the Marvel director appeared at E3 for a World Building panel where he talked about his work with the Guardians of the Galaxy. It was there Gunn said he has completed the first script treatment of the third Guardians film. However, it seems like the MCU's canon is giving Gunn a headache with the project.

"I'm writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I'm excited about it. I feel really great about it. But there's one little thing that I had in the first movie," Gunn admitted.

"Now, Marvel Canon—MCU—is crazy. There's the 616 universe which is the Marvel Comics Universe, which people get hung up on that canon, and then there's the MCU, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has a separate canon (inspired by but not exactly the same as the 616). I did something in the first movie of Guardians where it was in the background but it was distinctly there, and people know that it's there. And I'm like goddammit. Because I have a really good storytelling reason for breaking the canon, and I stayed up last night figuring out if I'm gonna do it or not. I still don't know."

Continuing, Gunn teased fans about the canonical tidbit he was hoping to change in Guardians 3.

"I'll actually tell ya. In the first movie, there is the mugshot sequence where the characters go through and they're going through the mugshots and having their picture taken. And the Nova Corps has information about each of the characters coming up on their machinery," Gunn explained. "Those things are something that your average viewer doesn't see at all. But there's a lot of background I put into those things about who they've worked with, where they are from, what's going on. And it's one of those things that I'm thinking about changing."

For now, fans can only speculate about the fact Gunn is looking to change, but there are some valid avenues to alter the bit if the director needs to. The Nova Corps may have scouted information about the crew, but there is always a chance the military organization was fed bad intel. If the MCU really needs to make a background change, then Gunn is skilled enough to swing the alteration. Now, it's just a matter of whether or not the writer can get approval from Marvel Studios about the change...

The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
