James Gunn To Set Up MCU Spinoffs Around 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 3'

Fans know the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a confusing place, but the franchise is only expected to be more complicated with time. It will fall to James Gunn to help parse out the series' cosmic tales in the coming years, and the director will even layout spin-outs once Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes around.

Recently, Gunn spoke with fans about his responsibilities at Marvel Studios, and the director opened up a bit about his role. Gunn told fans at Hasbro HasCon (via MCU Exchange) this weekend he's "shepherding the future of the Marvel cosmic universe."

However, it was the director's last note that piqued interest. Gunn continued, saying he "also creating movies around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."

Of course, fans have known for a while that Gunn's place in the MCU is a growing one. The director told IGN this year that he's in talks with Kevin Feige constantly about the franchise's future.

"We talk about it all the time," Gunn explained. "It's already a part of what I'm doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we're talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that's a story that will lead to other stories. It's innate to the DNA that that's the end of a trilogy but it's the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That's a part of what I'm doing now."

Still, fans are intrigued to hear spinoffs in the cosmic realm may be centered around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Little is known about the third film right now, but Gunn did reveal he finished its treatment recently. The movie is expected to bring in characters like Adam Warlock, so there's more than enough content for Gunn to play with moving forward.

When it comes to spin-offs, Marvel Studios could invest in a Groot film featuring Rocket if it so chose. There's also interest out there for a film starring the original Guardians team, so fans may see Starhawk pop back into the MCU that way. And, of course, Nova continues to be a hero that fans beg for on the regular. With so many choices out there, it will be up to Gunn to help guide Marvel into a new decade of filmmaking, and fans are feeling confident the director can do it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now available on Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-Ray.
