New Photo Showcases Kurt Russell's EGO In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

After months of toys, packaging, and promotional materials trickling out into the public, people finally got their first good look at Kurt Russell's character in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer, which is the 3rd Most Anticipated Comic Book Movie as voted by ComicBook.com readers.

Russell is playing Star-Lord Peter Quill's father, Ego the Living Planet—a change from the source canon that we can probably expect to take place in the pages of the comics any minute now.

Though his design was first revealed as an action figure, the latest trailer gave a clear indication of the character's human form as Russell also delivered the first spoken line we've heard from Ego.

With the floodgates open as the film ramps up toward its release date, Empire has now published a new, better picture featuring Ego the Living Planet.

It is said that this is only his human form, and that there will also be the more comic-accurate planetoid version of the character featured in the film, inspired by album covers from the band YES.

The picture gives a better look at Russell's costume design for the film, with the shoulders, wrists, and side panels of his jacket looking almost like clockworks, even Asgardian in appearance.

The scarf-like cape with buckles is also a nice touch, allowing Ego to look like a typical crime fighter while maintaining body warmth in cold climates. That coupled with the classic Kurt Russell scruff makes for one sexy alien—we can see why Mama Quill fell in love with someone quite literally out of this world.

It will be interesting to see how Ego factors into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's wider plot and the team's mission of protecting the universe. Though Ayesha has been billed as the main villain, could we see a misunderstanding, possibly even divergent philosophies, drive father and son even further apart?

We'll find out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5.
