Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still in theaters but it is never too soon to look ahead to the next adventure with the world's favorite cosmic misfits.

Just before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 released in theaters, James Gunn revealed he would be directing a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though he did not provide a release date or much further information about the third installment of the trilogy. In fact, we will see the Guardians of the Galaxy characters at least two more times before their next standalone outing when they team-up with the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel.

Still, Gunn is hard at work on the third film and is making major progress. "I'm writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday," Gunn said. "I'm excited about it. I feel really great about it."

The reveal came at a Chris Hardwick hosted panel at E3 which was celebrating "World Builders." Gunn was recognized for his cosmic expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Such world building will likely continue when the Guardians return, introducing faces such as Adam Warlock and continuing to expand on the stories of Starhawk and Martinex.
