Guardians Vol. 2 Director Confirms Star-Lord Can Understand Groot

Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follow!

In 2014, the world was introduced to their favorite talking houseplant Groot. However, his "vocabulistics" (as Rocket called them) are limited to "I" and "Am" and "Groot," exclusively in that order. While he is only saying those three words for the audience and most characters around him, some of those close to Groot are able to interpret his three word delivery for the much deeper meaning.

By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Rocket Raccoon was no longer alone in understanding Groot's native wooden tongue. One of the five post-credits scenes which was tagged onto the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 saw Peter Quill bursting into a now older version of Groot's bedroom. When Groot refuses to put his video game down and belittles Quill, Star-Lord responds by insisting he is not boring.

Naturally, fans understood that Quill was now capable of understanding Groot. For those who were unsure, though, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 James Gunn took to Facebook for a spoiler-filled Q&A where he confirmed that Quill can communicate with the talking tree.

"Peter Quill obviously does understand Adolescent Groot at the end of the movie," Gunn said. "As for the other Guardians, we'll have to wait and see."

The version of Groot seen in the post-credits tag has been billed as Teen Groot by many fans online already but Gunn says the team has a different name for him.

"One other minor misconception is people think that's Teen Groot at the end of the movie," Gunn said. "It's actually Adolescent Groot. I would call him Tween Groot. We call him Adolescent Groot. He's not quite a teenager yet and, yes, Peter Quill can understand him."

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin.
