Iron Fist Star Says Danny Isn't Close to Being a Superhero Yet

Iron Fist is now out on Netflix, adding the final lead-in to the upcoming Defenders crossover event with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil. While those other three series have generally been well-received by fans and critics alike, Iron Fist has admittedly had a harder time of things. Between all the diversity controversy surrounding the show - plus overall lukewarm reviews - it seems that Iron Fist is one Marvel Cinematic Universe character that still has a lot of work to do earning his place.

...And it's not the best sign that recent interviews with the Iron Fist cast have revealed that the show is going to be taking its sweet time with revealing some of the biggest things that fans arguably want to see.

Recently, Iron Fist star Finn Jones revealed that his comic book costume won't be seen on the show for a long time - and now we have more quotes from Jones, which expand on the idea that Danny Rand has a long way to go to actually being a superhero who is even worthy of a costume to wear. As Jones told TV Guide:

"What we see in the first season, Danny isn't a superhero yet. He hasn't earned the right to attain that title. He has a lot of individual things he has to deal with before he can claim that identity.

I think throughout the series that Danny realizes the world isn't just black and white. It's gray and being okay with that grayness. It's being okay with being a billionaire titan of industry and also being a Buddhist and a spiritual warrior," Jones said. "You can be both things. The world isn't black and white. Danny's journey is about finding out the grayness of it."

Iron Fist earned some of its biggest criticism for telling a thirteen-episode story that arguably (mis)spent most of its time spinning wheels but going nowhere. While Jones' quote may be intended to tease the future development of Danny Rand over the course of The Defenders and (potential) future seasons of Iron Fist, it also in a way confirms exactly what critics have said: after thirteen episodes of superhero origin story, we're not even close to seeing our superhero.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage all managed to take their respective characters from a place of downtrodden isolation, to uneasy status as heroes with purpose, and friends. Why Iron Fist failed to accomplish the same goal remains to be told by those behind the show - but stretching that road out even further (as Finn Jones implies) could be a fatal mistake.

Right now, there isn't all that much fan love or support for the MCU version of Danny Rand, so hopefully The Defenders improves his status, so that the prospect of Iron Fist season 2 becomes a lot more enticing than it is now.
