Is Marvel Going To Kill Captain America Again?

Marvel announced 52 titles will be published as a part of their new Legacy initiative, revealing covers for the titles in animated images that reference the historic artwork that inspired each of them.

But while there are a slew of returning titles, a few comics changing names, and a some more brand new series, there is one noticeable absence that fans might have noticed — no Captain America.

While Sam Wilson appears to be safe for the future, he'll be giving up the vibranium shield for good and going back to familiar duds as the Falcon. But his Hydra-allied mentor is no where to be found.

Steve Rogers has experienced quite a tumultuous life since he first died over ten years ago after the first Civil War event. The character has been revived, become the Director of SHIELD, stepped down from that position, became Captain America again (after then-Cap Bucky "died"), was trapped in an alternate dimension for years, escaped, aged to old man after someone took the super serum from his body, passed the mantle to Wilson, re-powered by a sentient Cosmic Cube in the form of a child who also rewrote reality so that he'd believe he's a Hydra agent and became Captain America again. Whew, are you still with me?

Rogers has since seized control of the United States and become the Supreme Leader of Hydra, terrorizing heroes and citizens alike in the Secret Empire event.

Some have pondered how such a beloved character can come back after taking such a dark and twisted turn to the evil team, but the signs are hinting that he might not come back at all.

The one shot comic Marvel Generations: The Americas will feature Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers teaming up, but the released cover art and the synopsis from Marvel makes it seem like it'll be a past version of Cap due to the wonky nature of the Vanishing Point.

Could Rogers bite the dust once more in the pages of Marvel Comics? We wouldn't be surprised, but given that they've recently done this storyline and pretty much killed off every other founding member of the Avengers at some point in last few years, it doesn't seem like the best choice for storytelling.

Maybe he'll just be taken off the board for the time being, a la the Fantastic Four in the post-Secret Wars Marvel Universe. We'll find out when more information comes out about Marvel Legacy, probably around San Diego Comic-Con.
