Josh Brolin's Cable Time-Travel Origin Confirmed By Ryan Reynolds

With the first look of Josh Brolin as Cable as he will appear in Deadpool 2 came a confirmation regarding the character's time-traveling origin story.

Ryan Reynolds took to social media to reveal the first photo of Brolin in the part, complete with a caption reading, "We all have that one, grumpy, heavily armed Uncle from the future." The statement confirms Cable's cinematic origins will follow those of the pages of Marvel Comics.

In Marvel Comics, Cable first appeared on the pages in March of 1990 in New Mutants #87, created by Rob Liefeld. The character arrived from another timeline, having traveled through time to the future as an infant. In the future, he would grow as a warrior, before returning to the present timeline.

Brolin was cast in the role over the summer, with production having begun on Deadpool 2 in June.

"We couldn't have cast a better Cable," Deadpool 2 director David Leitch revealed. "We were filming last night and both [Brolin and Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds] were on set, and the chemistry is amazing. It's such a fun movie to be on. I'm really grateful."

David Leitch (John Wick) will direct the sequel, taking over for original Deadpool director Tim Miller.

Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth. For the sequel, he'll be joined by Josh Brolin as Cable. Cable was co-created by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson. He has often been paired with Deadpool as his grim, serious demeanor serves as the perfect foil to Deadpool's crude and zany humor. The duo headlined an ongoing comic book series, Cable & Deadpool, for 50 issues.

Jack Kesy has been cast in an undisclosed villain role, speculated to be Black Tom Cassidy. Shioli Kutsuna has also joined the production in an undisclosed "key" role.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on June 1, 2018.
