Kevin Feige Explains Why Baby Groot Has A Costume

Everyone was excited to see all of the Guardians make a return in the debut Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer, but being honest, it was really all about the adorable Baby Groot.

Groot has grown up some since fans last saw him dancing to Michael Jackson in his pot, and fans were surprised to see him sporting an actual costume in the trailer. ComicBook.com spoke to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at a recent set visit about why he's sporting the new threads.

"He only has it very briefly and that is a Ravager costume, which the very mean Ravagers sort of quickly sew and put him in, because they think it's funny. Groot does not think it's funny."

Maybe that's the reason why Baby Groot is so angry in the trailer.

Feige also touched on the spirit of the original film, one that didn't forget to laugh at itself from time to time. Scene's like Peter Quill challenging Ronan to a dance off in the final climactic battle spring to mind.

"Well, I would say the spirit of that continues throughout the entire movie, starting with an opening in which they're supposedly the heroes, but they went and snagged the frickin' thing they were supposed to be protecting, which was a very early idea the James had."

They might want to leave that job out of their pitch to future clients.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
