Logan: New Look At Caliban Released

01/28/2017 02:20 pm EST

As the Logan hype machine continues to roll, prepping fans for the release of Hugh Jackman's final outing as the Wolverine, social media accounts associated with the film have been trickling out info and images from the film.

The WponX Instagram account has been a such a source for beautiful, black-and-white teaser images. And its latest contribution to the campaign includes a photo of Stephen Merchant's turn as Caliban.

Caliban did appear in the last franchise installment X-Men: Apocalypse, as portrayed by Tómas Lemarquis, though the character will play a different and larger role in James Mangold's sequel to the Wolverine.

Whatever explanation the filmmakers have is pretty inconsequential at this point as the X-Men series of films have provided two different versions of Angel, Emma Frost, and Colossus; no one should mind a different Caliban.

But it will be interesting to see if they do attempt to explain the discrepancies, be the reasons timeline or time lapsed.

Mangold's photographs from the production of Logan are particularly striking. One can hope that fans are treated with a black-and-white version of the film after release, a la Mad Max: Fury Road. Check out the WponX Instagram page for more teases of the film's plots, settings and characters as the film ramps up toward its forthcoming release date.

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
