Logan's Connection To X-Men Origins: Wolverine Revealed

Hugh Jackman's final portrayal of the Wolverine in Logan didn't come without connections to his previous efforts on the big screen.

While Logan stands very much on its own, the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine play a role in the movie's events (as do the other X-Men films which shaped Logan's life, but the X-Men Origins callback is more direct). Some viewers who either didn't watch the less-than-beloved Origins film or don't have it fresh in their minds might have missed the connection.

Late in Logan's runtime, he comes face to face with Richard Grant's Dr.Rice character. During their conversation, Dr. Rice points out that the Adamantium inside of Logan is what has been making him so weak but, being a scientist, he can help to make Logan healthy again.

Dr. Rice references Logan's treatment seen in Origins which turned his bones to the unbreakable metal and, furthermore, says it was his father who injected the rare element into the Wolverine. Wolverine follows it up by telling Dr. Rice that he killed him.

The man Dr. Rice is referring to as his father was Dr. Cornelius, portrayed by David Ritchie in the 2009 film. By the time Origins came to an end, the Wolverine had achieved his revenge against the man who turned him into a mutant science project. Of course, this is likely what placed Dr. Rice on the path of wanting to control the mutants.

In 2029, the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine.

She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins … In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are ageing, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.
