Luke Cage Showrunner Reveals What He Wants For Season 2

The Defenders are set to defend the streets of New York City from the devious forces of the Hand when the new Netflix series premieres in August. But when the adventure ends, the characters will once again go their separate ways to their separate series.

Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker is already hard at work on the second season featuring the bulletproof defender of Harlem. Cage's actor Mike Colter recently revealed he hopes "to see [Season 2] out early next year," but that has yet to be confirmed.

Rest assured that second season is on the way and Coker spoke a little bit about what he wants to see and what fans can expect when the Power Man returns to Netflix in the upcoming second season of Luke Cage.

"Just bulletproof dopeness!" Coker said while speaking with Mashable about the expectations. "That's what I want to maintain. I'm hoping that people continue to really enjoy the flavor of the show, and that it feels like a real Harlem and a real New York, but at the same time, has that Marvel twist — the Marvel twist with Netflix's reach. That's really this combination of all those factors that I think made Season 1 really a great ride, and hopefully we can maintain that same feel."

Given that the music had such a huge role in the series with consistent guest artists performing in Cottonmouth's club, Coker made a comparison that's apt for any fan familiar with hip hop.

"The analogy I say is that, I want Season 2 to be 'The Low End Theory,'" Coker explained, "'Low End Theory,' if you're a hip hop fan, you know that that's A Tribe Called Quest's second record. The first record, '[People's] Instinctive Travels [and the Paths of Rhythm], was great, but then 'Low End Theory' was the record that everyone says ... when they think of A Tribe Called Quest taking it to the next level."

It makes sense that he'd namedrop one of the most influential rap groups in music history, given the status of Tribe member Ali Shaheed Muhammad as one of the composers of the Luke Cage score alongside Adrian Younge.

"That's my hope for Season 2, is that we have some of the similar sounds, but we go in a deeper direction," Coker said. "So I'm hoping that we avoid the sophomore jinx in that, because we know what we have in Mike [Colter], because we know what we have in our cast, that we're just pushing deeper."

Luke Cage can next be seen in Defenders, premiering on Netflix August 18.
