Chris Hemsworth Reveals Surprising Marvel Contract Bit About DC Films

It sounds like Marvel Studios is intent on keeping its actors on lockdown.

Speaking at the Supanova convention in Australia, Thor Ragnarok star Chris Hemsworth said that it was "illegal" for Marvel Studios actors to appear in DC Comics movies.

"Illegal" is maybe a strong word that Hemsworth used for humorous effect, but it does sound like Marvel puts a stipulation into its actors' contracts prohibiting them from moonlighting with the "Distinguished Competition." Put simply, Marvel doesn't want to cross the superhero streams by having one of its Avengers getting a second job as a member of the Justice League.

Interestingly, this stipulation seems only to extend to DC Comics movies and not to Fox's X-Men movies universe. The biggest example of this is Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and will play Cable in Deadpool 2 and, presumably, the X-Force movie series that will follow.

In Marvel Studio's Thor Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first, he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!

Thor: Ragnarok is inspired by the classic The Mighty Thor comics of Walt Simonson and the Incredible Hulk storyline "Planet Hulk" by Greg Pak, Carlo Pagulayan, and Aaron Lopresti. "Planet Hulk" saw Hul shot into space by several of Marvel's biggest heroes. Though they intended him to land on an uninhabited planet where he could live out his days peacefully, he instead landed on Sakaar, a planet ruled by a cruel emperor. There, Hulk was forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena until he and his Warbound banded together to overthrow the emperor in an armed insurrection.

Thor Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.

Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
