Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb On Whether The Defenders Will Get A Season 2

In just a couple of weeks, Netflix is slated to debut its next Marvel show, but fans are already asking the site for more. The Defenders will team up for an 8-episode miniseries in August, and fans want to know if the superhero squad will come together again for a second season. However, if you ask Jeph Loeb such a question, he'll say Marvel TV has no answer.

Recently, the head of Marvel TV sat down for a chat with Collider, and it was there the executive touched upon rumors regarding The Defenders and a second season. Here is what Loeb had to say:

"I don't know. We haven't really gotten to that place. I don't know that there will be a Defenders [2]," the producer admitted.

Fans would be pleased to see Netflix green-light a second season of The Defenders even if it hasn't come out yet. The show is a long-awaited piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans weren't pleased to hear its first season got a short order. Rather than a full series, The Defenders will roll out as a truncated miniseries, but Loeb stressed the studio's plans for the project never extended beyond an 8-episode order.

"It was always eight [episodes]. It had to do with what was the best way to tell the story," Loeb told Collider. "Our feeling was it broke really nicely and when you watch the show you sort of see 'Okay, well that's act one and that's act two and that's act three.'"

"You have to remember when you have that many characters you want to be able to service them but you also don't want to overload the audience," explained Loeb. "You want to be able to tell a story that's compelling and will go along and if finish the eight and wished it was the thirteen, good on us."

The Defenders will bring phase one of the Netflix Marvel universe to a close, and will likely set up the next big phase of the universe. In addition to the core four shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist), the universe will also be adding a Punisher series to its schedule, though no release date has been announced.

The Defenders stars Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murdock), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Sigourney Weaver (Alexandra), Elodie Yung (Elektra Natchios), Babs Olusanmokun (Sowande), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Rachel Taylor (Trish Walker), Scott Glenn (Stick), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse), Debbi Morgan (Delores), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page).

Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are all available on Netflix now, while The Defenders is expected later in the year. The Punisher does not currently have a release date. Netflix has announced a second season of Jessica Jones and a third season of Daredevil, but no release dates have been announced for those either.
