New Luke Cage Promo Released: Be King

Because it's good to be king...

A new promo for Luke Cage dropped today, featuring Mahershala Ali as the villainous Cottonmouth! At first it seems like he's speaking directly to us about his adoration for the real King of New York known as hip-hop legend Biggie Smalls, but he's really giving a speech to an unlucky, bloody victim.

Cottonmouth explains what it's like having a crown, as he stands in front of an iconic image of Biggie Smalls. Listen up Cotton, you are not the King of New York. Just wait until our unbreakable street-level hero Luke Cage finds you and shows you what's up. And he will find you...

After trying to lay low, Luke Cage eventually takes to the streets to rid Harlem of heavy-hitting criminals like Cottonmouth and his associates. The new series is already being compared to the likes of The Wire, while showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has promised fans a dark, gritty crime drama infused with '90s hip-hop.

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city, forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

This is the first Marvel/Netflix series leading up to the team-up event The Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) that is taking place outside of Hell's Kitchen - because Harlem needs love too.

Get ready for an intense action bingefest and don't forget to turn your bass all the way up, Luke Cage booms onto Netflix on September 30.
