Patrick Stewart Applying For US Citizenship For Surprising Reason

Patrick Stewart has become somewhat of an icon in the geek genre space. He's earned that status by portraying beloved characters like Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in FOX's X-Men films. His latest battle, however, is with an opponent of the more realistic variety.

Stewart reprises the role of Xavier in this weekend's Logan (which currently holds an 88.59 on ComicBook.com's composite rankings), which might turn out to be his last outing as the popular character. Despite exiting the series, he won't be taking it easy anytime soon, as he announced in an interview on ABC's The View. Joy Behar asked Stewart about a recent tweet of his that said "Had the worst sleep of my life last night," Stewart tweeted from Washington, D.C. "But I was sleeping less than 300 [yards] from where Donald Trump sleeps. Could there be a connection?" (via Variety).

It seems there very much is, as he then revealed he will be applying for U.S. citizenship. He said "As a result of this election, I am now applying for citizenship, because I want to be an American, too, because all of my friends in Washington said there is one thing you can do: fight, fight, oppose, oppose," Stewart said. "But I can't do it, because I'm not a citizen."

Stewart spends a great deal of his time in America, but he is actually a citizen of the U.K. That looks like it's going to change down the road, as Stewart aims to help change the system from within. It's a move that Professor X would be quite proud of actually.

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan is in theaters now.
