Ryan Reynolds Promises Crazy Reaction Video If Deadpool Gets An Oscar Nomination

Ryan Reynolds has had one of the most unusual Hollywood stories in recent memory with his time playing Deadpool For 20th Century Fox. Reynolds first played Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film in general and its interpretation of Deadpool in particularly met a lot of negativity from fans and critics.

The poor reception for X-Men Origins: Wolverine caused 20th Century Fox to squash plans for a Deadpool spinoff movie. Fans were disappointed, but the fate of the film changed when test footage leaked online. The huge response from fans prompted 20th Century Fox to put Deadpool on a fast track to production, and the polished version of the leaked test footage was shown at 20th Century Fox's Comic-Con International: San Diego panel.

"When that audience went ballistic — screaming for us to play it one more time — it was one of the strangest things," Reynolds says during a recording of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast. "It was a really great moment."

When Deadpool opened over Valentine's Day weekend, it set new box office records for an R-rated movie. Reynolds would have been more than satisfied with just that, but much to his surprise, Deadpool has become part of the Hollywood awards season conversation. The film has earned nominations for the Writers Guild Awards and the Golden Globes and is now considered a possibility for an Academy Awards nomination.

"If it does end up in that category, I think that's kind of a cool moment, for not just us, but for everybody — for the people that went to see the movie, the people that made the movie, the studio, even the Academy," Reynolds says. "I don't think that any superhero film has ever really broken that glass ceiling, so it would be nice to see one like Deadpool do it. And I can certainly promise one f—ing crazy reaction video online. In the Deadpool suit. Guaranteed."

Reynolds is mostly right about the lack of recognition for superhero movies by the Academy Awards. While the accrue the occasional technical awards, Heath Ledger's posthumous Best Supporting Actor win for The Dark Knight remains the only major victory for the genre.
