San Jose Councilman Sworn In Wearing Captain America Shield

Marvel has a new reason to be proud of its cultural influence, as elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are now, apparently, becoming part of Americans' real-life political world.

San Jose councilman Lan Diep was officially sworn in yesterday, wearing a Captain America shield during the ceremony. According to NBC Bay Area, the councilman is a "self-described comic nerd... he takes the job seriously, but takes himself less seriously, and wanted to do something fun."

As you can see, Diep himself stated that, "I think it's a symbol of what's positive in this darkened political landscape."

As many Marvel fans (and even those who aren't) would agree, Captain America is indeed a symbol of American ideals, which has shined through many dark moments in America's political history - including the character's introduction during the perilous times of WWII.

There are a lot of nice takeaways from this image, and one hopes the spirit of Captain America continues to serve Diep in office, leading him to the best decisions possible for his constituents.
