Sophie Turner Confirms New X-Men Movie Filming Soon

Production recently wrapped on Game of Thrones Season 7 and now that actress Sophie Turner's latest visit to Winterfell has run its course, it's time for her to begin a new semester at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

Turner was on the red carpet at the 70th British Academy Film Awards last night, where she laid her plans for 2017.

"We're about to start shooting the next X-Men," Turner told Hey U Guys, "we've just finished shooting Season 7 of [Game of] Thrones, and I've got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to Season 8."

Turner's comments seem to confirm that the next installment of the X-Men film franchise will begin in shooting in May as previously reported, though 20th Century Fox has yet to officially announce the sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse.

The next X-Men movie has been operating under the titles X-Men: Supernova and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The titles suggest that the next film could be a new adaptation of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," a classic X-Men comic book story. "The Dark Phoenix Saga" was one of the several stories used as inspiration for X-Men: The Last Stand, though the adaptation was not well-received by fans. Simon Kinberg, who is scripting the next film, has said that revisiting "The Dark Phoenix Saga" is a possibility.

Not much else is known about X-Men: Supernova, which will be the seventh X-Men movie. Kinberg is writing and has confirmed the film will be set in the 1990s, continuing the franchise's decade-hopping trend.

20th Century Fox has yet to officially announce a director for the next X-Men movie. Bryan Singer - who has directed four of the six X-Men movies so far including X-Men: Apocalypse – has stated that he would like to stay involved with the franchise, likely in a producer role, but that he was interested in taking a break from directing in order to pursue other films, including his adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Singer has also been brought on to direct Fox's untitled X-Men franchise TV pilot, something has said he was able to do specifically because his schedule is free for the next few months. This would seem to rule out the possibility of Singer returning to direct X-Men: Supernova.

X-Men: Supernova will film in Montreal at the same studio and at the same time that The New Mutants, the franchise's young adult movie spinoff, will begin production. The New Mutants is being directed by Josh Boone. Whether the side-by-side production schedules indicate some sort of interaction between X-Men: Supernova and The New Mutants, or if Boone is somehow involved in directed the next X-Men movie, is unknown.

It is also unclear which members of the X-Men: Apocalypse cast will return for X-Men: Supernova. The contracts of the adult cast members – James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult – all expired after X-Men: Apocalypse. Each actor has provided varying degrees of hope that they may return to the franchise again. Nothing has been confirmed but rumored New Mutants actress Anna Taylor-Joy suggested that McAvoy may reprise his role as Professor X for the spinoff.

The young cast is assumed to have signed multi-film contracts and are therefore expected to return for X-Men: Supernova. Turner is the first to confirm her return, but actress Alexandra Shipp dropped some hints that she may already be preparing for second time playing Storm.

X-Men: Supernova is set to begin production in Montreal in May 2017.
