Liev Schreiber Says Animated Spider-Man Movie Will Satisfy "Hardcore" Fans

After playing the role of Logan's older brother and arch nemesis Sabertooth in the oft maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, actor Liev Schreiber is returning to the Marvel Universe in Sony's Untitled Animated Spider-Man Movie project.

Schreiber has yet to reveal which role he's playing in the movie—only that he'll be voicing the film's villain—but the actor did reveal some intriguing details about the film's plot during a conversation with Collider.

"I think real hardcore Spidey fans will be able to follow this with great ease," Schreiber said to the outlet. "It will feel very familiar, in a good way, in a kind of throwback way."

For those who don't know, the animated projected is set to feature Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man who takes up the mantle after Peter Parker's death, played by Dope and the Get Down's Shameik Moore.

The fact that Schreiber is saying the film will please "hardcore" Spider-Man fans means that they're anticipating apprehension and blowback from people who aren't sick of seeing three different big screen interpretations of the Wall Crawler over the last decade and a half.

But Sony has decided to take a different direction with the Phil Lord and Chris Miller project, possibly due to the traditional Parker-version of Spider-Man being played by Tom Holland in their collaboration with Marvel Studios.

Schreiber said he has yet to begin the recording process for the new film, but that it should begin in the next month or so.

When asked why he took the project, the actor revealed a very simple and understandable reason for wanting to participate.

"It was my children, really," Schreiber said. "People know me from things like Chuck and Ray Donovan, and I now have an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old, and I would very much like to do things that they can see so they know what their father does."

Sony's Untitled Animated Spider-Man Movie is scheduled to premiere some time in 2018 and will be directed by Peter Ramsey and Bob Persichetti.
