Kevin Feige Promises More Bells And Whistles For Spider-Man Costume

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit later tonight, when it makes its debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

One of the biggest points of interest regarding this new Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man is his costume. As the third onscreen version of Spider-Man in ten years, Tom Holland's Spidey has to be distinct, but as the first MCU version of the character, he has to be familiar as well.

Between Spider-Man's introduction in Captain America: Civil War and the early promotional materials for Spider-Man: Homecoming, we already have an idea of how Peter Parker's friendship with Tony Stark will result in an upgraded Spider-Man suit. The Civil War after credits scene gave us a mysterious range of tech-specs for the suit, and we've since seen gadgets like what web-shooters and web-wings look like. Now, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is letting fans know: Spider-Man's costume has more surprises in store.

In a USA Today profile on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Kevin Feige dished about the Spider-Man costume, saying that Peter Parker's Stark-brand costume, "can do a lot more than he even realizes right now." He later added, "you begin to see just how much Tony Stark loves bells and whistles."

Fans have been split on this new approach to Spider-Man's costume. On the one hand, Marvel fans have approved of the new look of the costume (down to the eye articulations); on the other hand, Marvel die-hards have also felt a bit cheated by the idea that Peter Parker is getting these big upgrades from Tony Stark. As a science whiz, part of Spider-Man's lore has revolved around Peter figuring out the science behind his suit and building it himself.

Then again, ever since Sam Raimi brought Spider-Man into the realm of live-action movies, the idea of Peter Parker (a NYC kid strapped for cash) inventing the iconic and perfectly tailored and functional Spider-Man suit has seemed more and more unbelievable. As always, it's a balancing act between fantasies that work on the page, versus fantasy that works on the screen. Not every comic book trope can be preserved during adaptation...
