Spider-Man: Homecoming - Did We See Gwen Stacy?

Peter Parker's always-complicated romantic life seems to be centering on Liz Allen in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, but that doesn't mean that we might not see Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson in the franchise.

In fact, some fans think we've already seen Gwen, in the form of a student walking through the school with Liz in last night's trailer for the film.

When Liz is first seen, Peter and his friend Ned Leeds are watching her lead what is apparently a tour through the school, given that she seems to be directing a pair of younger students. One student, who doesn't look particularly thrilled to be on the tour, is a young, blonde girl with a headband and a sweater vest on over a white dress shirt.

Both the girl's wardrobe and her appearance match up with traditional depictions of Gwen Stacy, Peter's high school sweetheart whose death was one of the many tragic events that shaped him as an adult.

In spite of the new Spider-Man movies taking place while Peter is in high school, Gwen was never discussed as a consideration for a major role in Homecoming due to the fact that the Amazing Spider-Man movies both heavily featured her, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 including her death at the hands of the Green Goblin.

Adding to the mystery of that brief sequence is the fact that the blonde girl doesn't speak, so it's entirely possible she's just a background actor who happens to be in the shot, and dressed like fans expect Gwen to be dressed. She could also be an Easter egg, planted there to give fans a sense that the Spider-Man world includes Gwen, even if she's not a big part of the movie.

On the other hand, the actress looks a lot like The Nice Guys standout Angourie Rice, who has been confirmed as a cast member in an as-yet-unannounced role. Rumors have been claiming she would play Betty Brant, Peter's very first love from the comics and the eventual wife of Ned Leeds, the boy sitting next to Peter looking past her at Liz.
