Spider-Man: Homecoming Opens To $140 Million Internationally

Marvel's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is proving to be a global sensation. Spider-Man: Homecoming opened to $140 million internationally at the box office.

That total combined with the $117 million that Spider-Man: Homecoming earned at the box office domestically will put the film's opening weekend total at $257 million globally.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opened in approximately 60 percent of the total international territories that it will enter during its theatrical run. The film has earned $25.8 million in five days in South Korea and $61.3 million in Asia overall. In Latin America, the Mexican box office added $12 million and Brazil added another $9 million. In the United Kingdom Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $11.8 million. The film also earned $7.6 million in Australia and $7.8 million in Russia.

Key markets where Spider-Man: Homecoming has yet to open include France, Germany, Spain, Japan, and China.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first Spider-Man movie produced jointly by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures since both studios reached an agreement to work together on the character's films. Holland debuted in the role of Spider-Man inCaptain America: Civil War, where he was recruited by Tony Stark onto Team Iron Man to take on Team Captain America.

Filming for Spider-Man: Homecoming began in June 2016 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Georgia. There were also on location shoots in an Atlanta high school, a hotel, and Atlanta's West End. Some filming did take place in New York City, where the film wrapped production in October 2016.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine -- distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts, from a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Watts and Christopher Ford, and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is now playing in theaters.
