Spider-Man: Homecoming - That Masked Robbery Scene Has Comic Roots

Before Tom Holland came along, Spidey fans debated which actor was portrayed the web-slinging superhero best: Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. The general consensus is that Maguire was a better Peter Parker, perfectly capturing the character's emotional-pain and dorkiness, and Garfield was a better Spider-Man, excellng with his jokey quips (though they didn't always land).

However, after seeing Holland's take on the character in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War and, more recently, in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spidey fans are finally getting an actor that can actually pull off the the dual personalities of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

A great example of Holland's knack for Spidey's keen sense humor came in the beginning of the Homecoming trailer when he foiled an ATM robbery. Adding humor to the scene, the robbers conceal their identities by wearing masks of the Avengers: Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor. "Hey, you guys aren't the real Avengers," he quips. "I can tell, Hulk gives it away."

Aside from the spot-on witty remark, the scene is actually rooted in the comics. In an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, during Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's spectacular run, Spider-Man/Peter Parker encountered robbers wearing masks of Captain America, Iron Man, and Batman.

Yes, I said, Batman. If you weren't aware (though I'm sure most of you are), from time to time, Marvel likes to parody the DC universe. It's all in good fun.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast features Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, Hannibal Buress, and Jacob Batalon.

The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), based on a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Vacation reboot) and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers.

The film is produced by Marvel boss Kevin Feige and former Sony boss Amy Pascal. Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Jeremy Latcham, and Stan Lee are serving as Executive Producers.

Doctor Strange is now in theaters; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; Avengers: Infinity War – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; and Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017.
