Thor: Ragnarok's Tom Hiddleston Discusses Loki's Monstrous Nature

In the case of many great villains, they don't often view themselves as a bad person or entity. A part of the best portrayals is the approach of complexity and nuance, and how their own goals often come from a place of misguidedness, if not understanding.

Actors employ this to great use, especially in superhero films where their characters are so thoroughly defined. Sometimes a villain has to be viewed with some sense of sympathy, even when they commit unspeakable evils.

Such is in the case of Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor has been praised for his version of Thor's little brother for how he handles the material. And even though he makes some bad and selfish choices befitting a comic book villain, the reasons why are as plain as day.

With Hiddleston's Loki, throughout two Thors and an Avengers film, you could always see why Loki made those choices and often times viewers sympathized with his reasons. But that doesn't change the fact that the guy is evil.

While speaking with Collider about Kong: Skull Island, he was asked about coming from being the hero in a monster film to being the villain in a superhero film, and he gave a straightforward answer about his portrayal of Loki in the forthcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

He was asked whether he viewed Loki as a monster, and the actor simply replied, "Loki is a God of Mischief. Whether he's a monster is not for me to say."

That leaves it in the eyes of the viewer to decide. But the forthcoming film will probably take a decidedly more humorous tone, given that director Taika Waititi is very much a different filmmaker than Alan Taylor and Kenneth Branagh, who directed the second and first Thor films respectively.

"As a director, you can't help but leave a fingerprint of who you are on the film you make, and Taika is a very warm-hearted, generous spirit who loves to make people laugh," Hiddleston said. "I think you'll definitely see humor in Ragnarok."

Thor: Ragnarok is currently the 7th Most Anticipated Film as voted by ComicBook.com readers. Are you excited to see Loki on the screen with Thor, Hulk, and Doctor Strange? Let us know with your vote in the Movie Database below!
