Tom Holland Did Not Get Advice From Previous Spider-Man Actors

In the superhero movie genre there's a proud tradition of passing iconic roles to new actors, James Bond style. Alongside that tradition comes the secondary ritual of a new actor in major superhero role seeking advice from his predecessor(s). Sometimes, it's even a used as a nice meet-cute PR event.

Spider-Man has a live-action history that stretches all the way back to the '70s; although the character has seen a rapid turnaround in actors more recently: three in the last fifteen years, to be exact. That's a lot of potential guidance for a young actor like Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland to follow - but according to Holland, he hasn't gotten a lot of help from the other Spider-Man almuni.

Talking to Variety before the release of the EPIC new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, Holland was asked if he had gotten council on the role from previous Spider-Man movie actors, Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. According to Holland:

"No. I wasn't in touch with them. They both said some really lovely things about me online. I met Andrew at the BAFTAs the other day. It was cool. He's such a nice guy and we had a great chat and went our separate ways... We just talked about how fantastic he's been doing and all the brilliant movies he's been in lately. He talked to me about how excited I must be and how happy he was for me. It was all great."

Andrew Garfield has, indeed had the most unfortunate run in the Spider-Man franchise, serving as the odd middle child between Sony's original Spider-Man movie trilogy with Sam Raimi, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man that Holland plays. Of course, Garfield's career since then has been looking up, with acclaimed films like Silence or Oscar-caliber films like Hacksaw Ridge. So he's doing just fine.

Meanwhile, Tom Holland killed it as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, and from what we've seen in trailer #2, Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to solidify his star status, for sure.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has a 4.06 out of 5 ComicBook User Anticipation Rating, making it the ninth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Let us know how excited your are for Spider-Man: Homecoming by giving it your own rating below.
