Tom Holland Reveals The Comics That Most Influenced Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man is a character that has been around for decades, so one might expect translating him into a modern day teenager would be a challenge for Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland.

Luckily for Holland, there's one Marvel Comics series that took on that challenge already, and it was that comics series that Holland most drew inspiration from for his performance in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"The comics that sort of resonated with me most and I used for my performance was the Ultimate Spider-Man comics," Holland tells IGN. "They're so modern and up-to-date with what's happening in the world right now. For me, it was just a really, really strong thing to follow and I have so many screenshots on my phone from like lines that were written that I stole to use for the movie."

Ultimate Spider-Man launched in 2000, thus creating the alternate timeline of the Ultimate Marvel universe. Since it was detached from mainstream continuity, Ultimate Spider-Man provided writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mark Bagley with an opportunity to reimagine Spider-Man's entire history as if he was created in the 21st century instead of the 1960s. The interpretation proved quite successful and the series ran for 160 issue before ending and relaunching with the new Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

The influence of Ultimate Spider-Man on Spider-Man: Homecoming is apparent within the film's trailers. The bank scene with the Halloween mask Avengers comes straight out of an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, and young Peter Parker's relationship with his roommate Ned appears quite similar to Miles Morales' relationship with his roommate, Ganke.
