Wolverine 3: First Look At X-23 In Logan

After a series of teaser images at 10:23 a.m. Eastern time for most of October (the tenth month), the first teaser trailer for Logan has arrived. But this third Wolverine movie has a special guest: X-23 arrived in this first trailer as well, introducing the female clone of Wolverine to the masses.

In our first look at the young female clone, known in the comics as Laura Kinney, we're pretty sure we get to see her unique set of claws; because she's cloned only from the X chromosomes of Logan, she evolved a little differently, with two claws in each wrist and a claw that protrudes from each foot. The deadly assassin's skills are on display - trained from "birth" as a living weapon, X-23 might even be a more efficient killer than Wolverine himself. The shots are quick, as we see her leap and spin around in the midst of an attack, and toward the end of the trailer, we see another set of claws seemingly attacking Logan, as he uses his claws to block the attack. That could be from training, could be from their first meeting, or could be an indication that Logan's bit off more than he can chew with his new young charge. She also takes his hand, just like we saw on that first teaser poster, really pulling at the heart strings.

Logan is the third Wolverine solo movie (though many fans only acknowledge two), and the second by director James Mangold. The film, Hugh Jackman's ninth and last in the role of Wolverine, has tonal elements pulled from "Old Man Logan," a comic book storyline from Marvel Comics that showed a weathered and healing-factor-reduced version of the mutant in the future, raising a family until a terrible tragedy sets him on the path of the hero once again. Returning with Jackman is Sir Patrick Stewart in the role of Professor Charles Xavier. Debuting as X-23 is Dafne Keen.

The approach to X-23 here looks like we'll see Charles Xavier bringing her to Logan, as much to save him as to save her. In a world where mutants have all but died off, a mutant that is "like you, very much like you," as Xavier describes her to Logan, is special indeed.

Originally, speculation was that X-23 would be positioned as Wolverine's "replacement" in the X-Men movie line-up, allowing for a new clawed berserker character upon Jackman's retirement. The nature of this film, taking place at least a couple of decades in the future, however, it would be hard to use her in future films as a member of the team, unless some further time travel and continuity-bending shenanigans take place, which X-Men movies fans know full well is always a possibility.

Logan hits theaters March 3, 2017. Take a closer look at X-23's debut in the gallery below.
