Woody Harrelson Was Once In Talks For A Marvel Or DC Movie

Before long, it seems like most all of Hollywood's top talent and celebrities will have played a super hero or a role in a super hero movie. We almost had Brad Pitt as Cable, for crying out loud.

As it turns out, Woody Harrelson almost jumped on the super hero movie train, as well. The actor revealed as much during an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com at a press event for his upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes film in London.

When asked whether or not he is finally coming around to the idea of playing a role in a Marvel or DC super hero film, specifically, the actor revealed, "We did talk about it, actually."

"We had that talk but it didn't come to fruition," Harrelson said. "It wasn't the right time. I guess I'm open to it but I don't know. Just, generally, I do love just little movies, little indie movies."

War for the Planet of the Apes, of course, is anything but an indie movie but Harrelson was quick to add, "This is great. I love this," about his most recent endeavor.

With the "talk" not coming to fruition, the more likely candidate seems to be a Marvel Studios hero or villain with Harrelson ultimately electing to take on a role in Han Solo: A Star Wars Story under the same Disney umbrella, though operating within the Lucasfilm division.

The new War for the Planet of the Apes film sees Harrelson taking on the villainous role of Colonel J. McCullough, the opposition of Caesar and his morally balanced apes.

"I did talk to [director Matt Reeves] about humanizing [the Colonel] a bit and not making it so carte blanche evil, not cart blanche, but totally evil," Harrelson said. "We did try to add some thing in there to humanize him a bit."

Still, the Colonel turns out to be quite ruthless. Harrelson had a heavy job on his hands, not only in crafting the War for the Planet of the Apes villain, but also in acting opposite humans who would later be disguised by computers as apes.

"It's definitely unusual and somethign to get used to but those are Andy [Serkis]'s eyes, Andy's movements, Andy's performance, you know?" Harrelson said. "Even though it is like, I guess you could call it putting make-up on with the CG but what they're doing, I mean, they're amazing. At first, it's a little weird, the dots, but you just get used to it."

In War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

The movie is being directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), based on a script he co-wrote with Mark Bomback. It is produced by Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver.
