X-Men: Simon Kinberg Teases X-Force Film's Dark Story

Over the weekend, the X-Men Cinematic Universe was thrust into the limelight yet again as a new film was added to its canon. Logan debuted in cinemas to rave reviews and continues to earn blockbusting revenue thanks to its gritty storyline. With both Logan and Deadpool bringing success to 20th Century Fox, the studio's fans are wondering if it will keep working with R-rated superhero features. The box office numbers prove fans are overwhelming interested in exploring darker stories which can't be contained in a PG-13 film. And, when it comes to the upcoming X-Force movies, fan should expect the ensemble flick to feature such a plot.

Recently, a noted producer within the X-Men franchise spoke with Deadline about Logan's undeniable appeal. It was there Simon Kinberg discussed the future of the X-Men films, and he described what kind of story X-Force would have.

"Deadpool 2 is going into production this year," Kinberg started. "Then X Force which is a combination of Deadpool, and Cable – they're like the Black ops of the X-Men. They're much darker and have an R-rated decibel."

Of course, this isn't the first time Kinberg has stressed X-Force will likely receive a restricted rating. Last year, the producer told Den of Geek that Fox was open to films being raunchier, darker, and more violent.

"When there are films that want to be raunchier, want to be darker, want to be violent or R-rated, [Fox will] be open to it," he said. "If we were to make an X-Force movie, that probably should be R-rated."

For fans, there is little surprise in hearing about X-Force's intended rating. After all, the comic itself is not known for its tame manners or polite quips. Kinberg also noted the film will feature Deadpool and Cable, giving fans credence to their long-held suspicions. If the former is in X-Force, then there is no way the film will scrape by with anything less than a PG-13 rating. And, with Cable on-board as well, then an R-rating is all but certain.
