Fox's X-Men Pilot Likely To Receive Early Series Pickup

Alongside reports of the CW picking up the Black Lightning pilot for a mid-season rollout, Fox is also likely to bolster their own comic-based programming with a little mutant flavor.

After pushing two of their six pilot offerings off-cycle for the coming season, the Hollywood Reporter states that Matt Nix's X-Men-based program is the most likely to be picked up for a series order.

The trade reports that the Bryan Singer-directed pilot from the former Burn Notice showrunner is rumored to receive an early pick up from the network, joining Lucifer and (maybe) Gotham as a part of Fox's slate of comic book TV shows.

Fox has recently seen a resurgence of popularity in their X-Men properties after a string of hits in the form of Deadpool, Logan, and the FX series Legion.

The X-Men pilot, referred to as "Gifted" during its production, would be set in the main continuity of X-Men films, unlike Legion which carved out its own weird universe to exist in.

Though the series is still officially untitled, with mounting buzz for a series order building we're likely to learn the name of the upcoming show sooner than later.

The X-Men TV pilot follows Kate and Reed Stewart, two human parents who discover that their children are mutants. The family is forced to go on the run from an anti-mutant government and eventually meet up with an underground mutant resistance movement led by a mutant called Sam. The government has the mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels, which were previously seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, at its disposal. Other X-Men from the Marvel Comics universe, including Polaris and Blink, are expected to appear.

Gifted is currently in pre-production and was developed by Matt Nix, who wrote the pilot episode. X-Men movies veteran Bryan Singer will direct. Nix and Singer, along with Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jim Chory, and Jeph Loeb will all serve as executive producers. The pilot stars Redford, Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Jamie Chung, Sean Teale, Natalie Alyn Lind, Emma Dumont, Percy Hynes White, and Coby Bell.
