5 Best Moments in the First Suicide Squad Trailer

07/13/2015 06:19 pm EDT

When we sit down to watch a trailer like Suicide Squad's first one for the first 10 or 20 times, we're looking for things to learn, questions to ask, and analyzing it frame by frame.

But sometimes, we just want to talk about what looks cool. Here are five of the best moments from the first trailer, and what they might mean for the film.

Meet The Wall

Another writer is handling "best lines," but man, oh man, you could pretty much just choose every line uttered by Viola Davis as Amanda "The Wall" Waller in this first trailer. Her opening narration and conversation tell you right away, she is 100% in charge, and she's 100% confident she'll stay that way. That's an impressive feat to pull off in about 1 minute of audio.

It's Batman!

Okay, so this surprise got ruined by set photos and videos, but it is nice to see in action, official, and in high quality. This is most likely a flashback sequence, with Batman taking down the Joker and Harley Quinn as they speed through city streets. This, along with Waller's line about Superman, is an instant link between the films of the growing DC Cinematic Universe. Just like the Joker's writing on Robin's costume and the mirrored gif of Zod using heat vision, we know without question that these are all in one world.

Ready for Action

While there is probably one too many shots of the assembled Squad walking toward the camera or standing in a straight line together, that's mitigated pretty well by the action sequences. The only squad members we really see actively in combat are Harley, Deadshot, and Katana, and each of those moments gives only a tiny fraction of a moment; it's a lost art in a trailer to actually not show you a full action shot, but it doesn't seem like we saw one in this three minutes. The fact that we don't see characters like Croc and Enchantress fighting yet is great: it leaves us more to look forward to. And yeah, the assembled squad all walking together was pretty cool, too.

Harley Locks and Loads

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is featured heavily in this first trailer, a testament to both the character and actress's star power. But the quick shot at 2:05 captures the character so nicely. As they get ready for battle, Harley lifts up her baseball bat and acts like she's cocking a shotgun. It's this tiny, odd, out-of-place moment of levity, and it should endear her to a lot of Harley fans quickly. The wink is what really sells it.

(Honorable mention: her smile in the car, blowing bubble gum, doing acrobatics; basically every moment she's on screen).

The Joker Laughs

There are many questions about how the Joker will be used in Suicide Squad, but when the screen goes dark and all you hear is his laughter (2:38), it's hard not to feel a sense of anticipation and a twinge of fear for what Jared Leto has in store in his turn at the clown prince of crime.

(Honorable mention: That final line. Chills.)

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, hits theaters August 6, 2016.
