Aymar Azaïzia, Head of Assassin's Creed Content at Ubisoft, has confirmed that the Assassin's Creed film takes place in the same universe as the Assassin's Creed videogames and other tie-in products, such as comics and books.

Azaïzia answered a question concerning the movie's place in Assassin's Creed canon during a Q&A session on Twitter, saying "We share the same universe. Elements in the film have consequences as in our games, comics, and books."

The question was first raised in the article revealing the first image of Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch stated the film took place in "the same world" as the games. Azaïzia stressed that the movie will tell a new story, with a new protagonist, but that it is still a "real" Assassin's Creed story.

In Assassin's Creed, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

The film stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and is directed by Justin Kurzel. Assassin's Creed opens Dec. 21, 2016.
