Deadpool's Tim Miller Says The Goon Movie "Will Happen," Announcement Coming Soon

The Goon -- a comic book series that Deadpool director Tim Miller describes as "Army of Darkness meets Goodfellas -- is still on track for the animated movie treatment, Miller said during a recent interview.

It has been years since The Goon was slated to become a feature film starring Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown and, at one point, directed by David Fincher. The script, written by the comic's creator Eric Powell, has been rewritten at least once, and in 2012, fans raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter to help get the movie off the ground.

"Eric is amazing; we've known him for a long time now. I have known Mike Richardson and Dark Horse for a long time, so I tried to get the comic and they said yes and Eric wrote the script," Miller explained to Collider in a recent video interview, embedded above. "It's f—ing great, which I think normally the creators are often pushed aside. We didn't want to do that, we brought Eric right in. Eric wrote the script and it's great. It's just a hard one because it's not Disney; it's not G-rated. So it took a while. We pitched it and we got a lot of "no"s and we did a Kickstarter, and we raised a lot of money to do it. We've done a storyboard animatic for the whole movie and we used it to pitch it and we will have an announcement quite soon. I can't make it quite yet, but it will happen. We have never given up."

Like Deadpool, the hope is that if the movie sits in development hell for years but then a remarkable product comes out at the end, it will all have been worth it.

"I don't think you can tailor what Powell does to what Hollywood does," Fincher said in 2011. "I think you have to allow for the disparity."

There have been periodic updates, and Miller and Blur Studios, who animated a scene as a proof of concept before even the Kickstarter was launched, have never walked back their passion for the movie. The fact that it is planned as an animated feature also means that there is less fear of the actors "aging out" of the roles than one might have for a live-action comic book movie.
