Don Rickles Passed Before Recording Toy Story 4 Dialogue

Actor and comedy giant Don Rickles passed away in his home on Thursday. He was 90 years old.

Rickles was known for his biting, sharp wit, and his ability to poke fun at even the most unapproachable celebrities, including former President of the United States Ronald Reagan during his own inauguration.

Over the last two decades, Rickles had a regular gig as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the beloved Disney and Pixar franchise Toy Story.

And though a fourth installment in the Toy Story series was announced long ago, pre-production of the film has yet to finish and Rickles passed before he could record any dialogue for the project, his rep confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter.

Rickles played Mr. Potato Head in all three main Toy Story films as well as various TV specials and shorts airing with other films. Alongside characters like Rex, RC, the Green Army Men, and Hamm, Mr. Potato Head was one of the main allies to Buzz and Woody in their escapades.

It's unclear what will happen to the character with Rickles' passing. Since he's such a beloved character, despite his crankiness, it's unlikely that director John Lasseter would decide to remove Mr. Potato Head altogether.

It should be noted that this isn't the first time Pixar and Disney have had to deal with the passing of actors behind some of their most prominent characters. Jim Varney, who played Slink in the first two Toy Story films, passed away in 2000 and was replaced by Blake Clark. Paul Newman passed away in 2008 after portraying Doc Hudson in Cars.

In the second Cars film, it was revealed that Hudson passed away as Pixar elected not to recast the character.

While friends and family mourn the loss of the Hollywood icon, we're likely not to hear anytime soon about what Pixar will do with Mr. Potato Head.
