First Look and Synopsis for Duncan Jones, Paul Rudd Netflix Movie Mute Released

Duncan Jones went for the big box office blowout last year with Warcraft, taking a risk on the difficult-to-get-right video game film adaptation. While it didn't wow audiences the way they were hoping, it certainly stretched Jones' creative muscles a bit, and let him see what it was like to direct a film on a completely different level from his usual fair. Perhaps that's why he's bounced back into what looks like more familiar territory with Mute, an original film that will debut on Netflix sometime in 2017.

But Mute isn't just an indie scifi thriller, as it has an incredibly accomplished cast to go along with the director of Moon and Source Code: Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux all star with newcomer Seyneb Saleh. The first synopsis accompanying the images signifies exactly how, as Netflix put in their press release, Duncan Jones will "return to his creative roots." The synopsis reads:

"Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo's search for her takes him deep into the city's seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

"The Netflix original film is directed by Duncan Jones and written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson. Stuart Fenegan serves as producer and Charles J.D. Schissel and Trevor Beattie serve as executive producers. The film will launch in all territories where Netflix is available in 2017."

The futuristic Berlin is in full display in two of the images, but really, the star of this first look is Paul Rudd's facial hair. We mustache Jones where in the process that facial hair came up, as it grows on you the more you look at it.

It'll be interesting to see how Jones works comedy into this as well with the "wise-cracking surgeons;" Many liked Moon for its moments of levity and it should be a great return to form.
