Jurassic World Opening Weekend Box Office Of $204.6 Million Is Second Best Of All Time
06/14/2015 10:36 am EDT
Jurassic World had a dinosaur-size opening weekend box office, exceeding even the most optimistic of expectations. After a huge $82.8 million opening day on Friday, Jurassic World followed it up with a strong $70.8 million Saturday. Jurassic World is now estimated for a $204.6 million opening weekend.
If the numbers hold up, Jurassic World's $204.6 million opening weekend gives the film the second best opening weekend of all time at the domestic box office. The only film ahead of Jurassic World is The Avengers, which opened to $207.4 million back in 2012. If Jurassic World winds up having a better than expected Sunday, the film actually has a chance at beating The Avengers when the final numbers come out on Monday.
Jurassic World's opening weekend exceeds the opening weekend of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which previously had the best opening weekend of the year with $191.3 million back in May. If Jurassic World can hold onto the record for best opening weekend of 2015 remains to be seen though, as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is likely to set new records in December.
In Jurassic World, Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited next installment of his groundbreaking Jurassic Park series. Colin Trevorrow directs the epic action-adventure based on the novel "Jurassic Park" by Michael Crichton. The screenplay is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Trevorrow & Derek Connolly.
