Minions Posts Near-Record Opening Weekend Gross

$115.2 million will buy a lot of bananas.
That's how much Minions should have by the end of the weekend in domestic gross. The number makes it come in at #2 on the all-time opening list for animations, after Shrek the Third's $122.5 million. It's only the fourth animated film to hit 100 million dollars in its opening weekend, as well.
The movie has also already made over $141 million in international box office in its debut. Starring Sandra Bullock, the film is a spin-off from the Despicable Me series that features the diminutive, gibberish-speaking yellow humanoids who are determined to work for the biggest, baddest villain out there – whomever that may be. Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda directed, while Coffin voices all the minions – he was busy on this one.
This outpaces the first two films in a massive way, with the first opening to $56 million and the second to $83.5 million. It's the only major animation release until August 7 when Lionsgate's Shaun the Sheep Movie hits theaters, so it should have some significant legs. However, its time at the very top of the box office list may be short, with Ant-Man debuting on Friday July 17, 2015 to positive critical acclaim and with the Marvel Studios machine behind it.
As for the rest of the weekend, Jurassic World stayed at number two, while Inside Out dropped to three. Warner Bros./New Line's horror flick The Gallows premiered at #5 at the Box Office with about $10 million (on a sub-one million dollar budget), while Self/Less (starring Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds) came in at #8 with an abysmal $5.379 million on a reported budget of $26 million.
