Up to this point, posters and banners for J.J. Abrams' forthcoming, seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise have been limited to the logo.
Not anymore. At D23, they showed off the official theatrical poster for the film featuring the art of veteran Star Wars artist Drew Struzan.
Struzan, while officially in retirement, was previously reported to have been in contact in The Force Awakens' director J.J. Abrams about taking one final journey into the galaxy far, far, away. According to reports, Abrams himself contacted Struzan about painting another Star Wars poster, and Struzan agreed.
Struzan has been behind each of the previous Star Wars posters, and is a standard-bearer for movie posters industry-wide.
Struzan is known in the for his painted movie posters, an increasing rarity in the digital age where most posters are made on computer editing software. Beyond painting the posters for Star Wars, Struzan created the posters for The Indiana Jones franchise, Back To The Future, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and countless more. He recently painted the cover for Batkid Begins.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th.
