Star Wars: The Force Awakens To Ask "Who Is Luke Skywalker?"

While the Skywalker twins may be taking a backseat to the new heroes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seems that Luke will still be a vital part the film's plot.

While Luke may not be as directly involved in the events of The Force Awakens as he was in the original trilogy (it seems Daisy, Finn, Han, Chewbacca, and BB-8 are taking the lead this time around), the son of Skywalker will be important thematically, if nothing else. The film will explore the question of "Who is Luke Skywalker?" and will perhaps discover that he is more or less than previously believed.

Luke certainly developed as a character during the original Star Wars trilogy, from the farm boy living on Tatooine to the full formed heir to the Jedi legacy, but by the time The Force Awakens opens it will have been 30 years since the celebration on Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi, and age brings compromise.

"The themes and ideas that we all continue to talk about are the themes and ideas that were the inherent in the original movies," Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy tells EW. "We're looking, obviously, for aspiration, for characters who are conflicted between good and evil, dark and light."

Meanwhile, Leia will come into possession of her father's old lightsaber, previously in Luke's possession, but lost during his duel with Darth Vader at Cloud City. What direction this will lead her in remains unclear.
