With this year's Transformers: The Last Knight seemingly setting up the idea that Cybertronian warriors have been making their way to Earth for centuries, it may be no surprise that the next stop for the robots coudl be Ancient Rome.

The revelation comes from an upcoming issue of Empire magazine, obtained in advance by the TFW 2005 fan site.

In an interview, filmmakers told Empire that there are not "14 movies in development" as some recent reports have alleged, but various ideas that have been workshopped and discarded or are not yet fully developed. The idea of a movie set in Ancient Rome is one that is still apparently alive and kicking, although there is no guarantee that it will be the next Transformers movie after the planned Bumblebee solo film.

The studio is also mulling an animated prequel that takes place on Cybertron and explores the characters' "origin myth," the story alleges.

It should be noted that there were significantly fewer modern cars in Ancient Rome, so what they will transform into could be interesting.

Transformers: The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci will reprise their roles from Transformers: Age of Extinction. Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, and John Turturro reprise their roles for the first three Transformers movies. The film also stars Isabela Moner, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Santiago Cabrera, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, and Mitch Pileggi.

Transformers: The Last Knight's voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, John Goodman as Hound, and John DiMaggio as Crosshairs. Other transformers appearing the film include Bumblebee, Drift, Hot Rod, Cogman, Canopy, Sqweeks, Grimlock, Megatron, Barricade, Onslaught, Hooligan, and Mohawk.

Transformers: The Last Knight opens in movie theaters on June 21, 2017.
