Why The Original Red Ranger Thinks Fans Love The Character

While everyone has their favorite member of the Power Rangers, many hold the Red Ranger in the highest regard. For the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the original holders of the power coins, that role fell to actor Austin St. John, and ComicBook.com's Jim Viscardi recently had the chance to chat with him about all things Power Rangers.

As the upcoming live-action reboot is set to enter theaters, St. John was asked why the Red Ranger's popularity has remained so massive. "I could tell you that I modeled Jason after my parents. My parents were always family first, so I treated my team like my family, my team was first," said St. John. "Nothing I wouldn't do for them, and sometimes I had to make hard calls when it came to other members of the team, I had to make choices to maybe lose one in order to save others, and those are choices that we are all faced with."

It also helped that there was always a member of the team to relate to. "I think aside from the fact that we can identify with that now, I think children identified with, whether it was myself or another character, was there was someone there, white, black, Asian. Audri Dubois, she was latino, there was someone there for everyone, boys, girls, valley girl types, the jock type. There was someone there for everyone to identify with, so Jason was humble, walked softly, and carry a big stick. He didn't want to fight but when the fight came on he was, well, he is the only undefeated Ranger in the history of the show, so he did his job, put his team first, and at the end of the day he tried to bring everybody home in one piece."

Power Rangers currently enjoys a 3.58 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings, and you can find the official synopsis below.

"Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late."

(Trini/Yellow Ranger), Sarah Grey (Amanda), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), Emily Maddison (Rebecca), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger).
