'Star Trek: The Next Generation' Cast On Possible 'Discovery' Cameos

The cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation is celebrating the show's 30th anniversary this year, and the group doesn't seem too eager to jump back into the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Discovery will be the first new Star Trek television series is over a decade, which is roughly the same situation Star Trek: The Next Generation was in when it debuted. The Star Trek: Discovery producers have stated that they've reached out to many franchise veterans about possibly appearing in a cameo or guest role, but The Next Generation crew doesn't seem overly eager about the idea.

"A guest shot? I don't know about that," said Brent Spiner, who played the android Data on The Next Generation, at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention (via Trek Movie). "I am very optimistic about this show. I am very hopeful that it is going to be fantastic. I hope it continues this wonderful epic journey that Star Trek has been on and I feel it probably will. I don't know that I need to be a part of it necessarily but I encourage them and hope for the best."

Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher, chimed in with an "Amen," while Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard, mostly seemed confused about when Discovery takes place.

"Is the new series set in the future, if we take The Next Generation as the present?" Stewart asked

Spiner clarified that the series is set in the past, and therefore be a prequel, and McFadden joked to Stewart that he "would have to have hair."

While this group may be ambivalent about an on-screen appearance, co-star Jonathan Frakes was happy to get behind the camera of an episode of Star Trek: Discovery, making Levar Burton jealous.

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on Sept. 24.
