Is A Star Wars 4k Restoration On The Way?

Many already own the Star Wars films on DVD and Blu-ray, and many of those same people probably owned the original trilogy on VHS. For people who need to have the latest and greatest, however, there might be a new entry just around the corner.

The latest technology craze regarding TV's is 4K, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards might have implied that a 4K version of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope is on the way (via Den of Geek). During an interview with Little White Lies, Edwards was speaking about the production process of Rogue One. He mentioned that before he started work on the picture he first went to Lucasfilm headquarters and watched A New Hope, but not just any old version of it, but a 4K version.

"On day one, we were in Lucasfilm in San Francisco with Industrial Light and Magic and John Knowles, our supervisor, he said that they've got a brand new 4K restoration print of A New Hope – it had literally just been finished. He suggested we sit and watch it."

It would make sense, as next year is the 40th Anniversary of the franchise, and 4K is starting to make a big push into people's homes. Next year will also see the release of Rogue One on home video, and a 4K package of both films would be a great way to sell some product.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.
