Star Wars Episode 9 Release Date Revealed

04/25/2017 02:16 pm EDT

Disney just announced the release date for Star Wars: Episode IX from Lucasfilm, director Colin Trevorrow's installment in the long-running series and the follow up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The movie will release on May 24, 2019, and will cap off the latest trilogy of films, intending to put a thematic end to the stories of Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren in the battle between the Resistance and the First Order.

This shift in release dates marks Rian Johnston's The Last Jedi as the final Star Wars movie to be released during the holiday season. Delays and reshoots during the productions of both The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story caused their release dates to be shifted from May back into December, which also affected the production of The Last Jedi.

The upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie seems to have course corrected to Lucasfilm's original plan as that film is set to release in May 2019, giving fans just five months of waiting time between Star Wars films.

And the wait between Episodes VIII and IX will be shorter as well, meaning fans will have to wait just 19 months between new installments in the Star Wars saga.

This is good news for everyone involved, as Disney and Lucasfilm executives are likely happy to see the productions get back to the original schedules while fans get to see Star Wars films as summer tentpoles.

All of the original Star Wars films released in May prior to Disney purchasing Lucasfilm—the fact that they're returning to the original schedule is yet another tradition the new regime is upholding.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017, release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017. Han Solo: A Star Wars Story hits on May 25, 2018.
