Colin Trevorrow Says He's The Right Man For Star Wars: Episode IX

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm and announced a brand new trilogy in the Star Wars franchise, many fans were both excited and apprehensive about the prospect of move films in the beloved series.

But JJ Abrams kicked things off with a bang in The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson is set to continue the momentum with The Last Jedi later this year. And now there's a lot of pressure on Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow who will be helming Episode IX. The director's latest film, The Book of Henry, was released to dismal reviews and currently has a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trevorrow recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the expectations of the final film in the sequel trilogy and why he's the right person for the job.

"Not only did I grow up on these stories, like all of us did, [but] I think that the values of Star Wars are values that I hold very close and very dear in my life," Trevorrow said to THR. "I feel that the message of the way that the Force teaches you to treat other people and show respect for others, and the way it guides you through life, is really important to me. And I hope everybody would realize that that set of stories has affected me as deeply in my life as it has affected them."

The director added that everyone has their own expectations for the film, and that he has a plan to meet those.

"I think the challenge for me is to recognize that everyone has their own personal relationship with these stories, and it's different depending on who you are," Trevorrow said. "And I need to make a film that you'll appreciate, even if your experience with it was different, which is making something that will be deeply emotionally resonant and satisfying for people all around the world. And I think about it a lot."

A lot of fans were shocked when Trevorrow was named the director of the movie with only two films under his belt at the time. But keep in mind Johnson is a similarly "green" director with just three films to his name.

Kathleen Kennedy seemed to be taking a cue from Marvel Studios book by getting talented, up-and-coming directors to helm the iconic franchise and surrounding them with a capable crew.

We'll see if it pays off when Star Wars: Episode IX and Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere in theaters.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
