Star Wars: Apparently Han Solo Isn't The Smuggler's Real Name

Some would argue that Han Solo is one of the biggest names in modern pop culture. The blaster-wielding nerf herder has certainly become easily recognizable in the years since Star Wars' original release.

But, as it turns out, the popular character might actually have more than one name that he goes by.

Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, recently revealed during a lecture at the University of Southern California that the upcoming Han Solo: A Star Wars Story will chronicle many important elements of the young character's life - including a particularly surprising one.

"That picks up with Han Solo when he was 18 years old and takes him through when he was 24. There are a few significant things that happen in Han Solo's life, like acquiring a certain vehicle and meeting a certain Wookiee that will happen in this film. But you will also discover how he got his name."

This is sure to raise some eyebrows for Star Wars fans, most of whom were probably under the impression that Han's name was really Han Solo.

Given what we already know about his canonical origins - that he turned to a life of crime and smuggling after being orphaned at a young age - it certainly would check out that he would need to adopt another moniker at some point in his life. What exactly his reason would be for doing so, however, is relatively unclear, meaning that Han Solo: A Star Wars Story has a pretty significant story to tell.

This also adds an added layer of significance to one of Han's early lines in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) ask if the man they're meeting is really Han Solo, Han (Harrison Ford) replies "I used to be." Many interpreted this as Han just feeling removed from his glory days, but if the name is indeed an additional moniker, it adds a sense of duality for the character.

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story is filming now under directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller for a May 25, 2018 release. Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca in the era before Star Wars: A New Hope, before they met Leia and Luke and embarked on a galaxy-saving adventure.
